Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sports have organised many initiatives, challenges and virtual activities in the past to help people stay active during the lockdown. Their most recent challenge, Miles More Together, benefited everybody in more ways than one. The challenge encouraged the public to get active which in order to support the physical and mental well-being of those who take part. In addition, the challenge was also a fundraising event to help provide relief to people facing food poverty during the pandemic across the Midlands.
LRS have worked closely with organisations across local communities around public health, this time they chose to fundraise for FareShare Midlands. Joe Hall, Sports Development Officer at LRS says “we wanted to support our communities however we could and with the rise of food poverty during the pandemic, it prompted many of our staff to get involved in supporting local food banks. As an organisation we have done lots of active challenges in the past which have also involved raising funds for those living in food poverty. With this challenge, we wanted to continue our support for people living in food poverty and decided to make it a fundraising challenge where all proceeds are donated to FareShare Midlands, as we know they redistribute food to various different groups across the area”.
The fundraiser began on Monday 8th February ran through till Sunday 14th February. The success of the fundraiser was distinguished right from day 1 where the fundraising event had already raised over £1,000, which is equivalent to 4,000 meals. As the event continued through the week, we saw updates across social media via the hashtag #MilesMoreTogether, these can still be accessed via the ‘Leicester-shire & Rutland Sport, Physical Activity & Wellbeing’ Facebook page. As the week came to a close, the final donations trickled in days after the event had already finished, in total, LRS raised an incredible £3,111.25 which equates to 12,445 meals going to support vulnerable men, women and children across the Midlands.
Highlights of the challenge include Beth Edge who is took on a distance of 2 miles in cartwheels, Luke and Geoff who have used their daily walk challenge to collect food from local residents and donate it all to food banks in Castle Donington. Other challenges included, larger groups running, walking and cycling the perimeter of the Leicestershire and Rutland country!
Incredible efforts were made even during the extreme snow and weather conditions, on behalf of FareShare Midlands, Sue Spare, Fundraising Manager says “it is truly heart-warming to see the amount of people that took part and make such an effort for this fundraising event. The amount raised is exceptional and means more people who are struggling to afford to eat can be supported during this difficult time. On behalf of FareShare Midlands, I’d like to thank everybody who took part in the Miles More Together challenge and the entire team at Leicestershire and Rutland Sport for organising the fundraiser”.
