The Sutton on Sea Community Larder is a food bank set up during the outbreak of COVID19. Based on Sutton High Street, the organisation was created for a community facing difficult times involving a great deal of financial and economic hardship.

Initially the Community Larder was set up as a food bank, to give out food parcels and offer essential shopping to people who were struggling. It is all about the community coming together to help each other during a period of crisis, through caring, sharing and supporting those in most need.

In addition to food, the Community Larder now has a school uniform bank, a baby bank (offering baby milk, food, wipes, etc), clothes for adults and teenagers, pet food and toys for younger children.

The organisation helps anyone who needs it - families, single people, the elderly, the unemployed, those on furlough and people suffering from domestic violence.

Before they became involved with FareShare Midlands, the Community Larder was struggling to find money to buy the food. Karen Holland of the Lincolnshire Coop spoke to Councillor Stephanie Carruthers, who runs the Community Larder. Karen explained about the Lincolnshire Food Redistribution Hub and asked if the Larder wanted to become a member.

Stephanie says “The FareShare Food Hub gives us fresh food, saving us an absolute fortune. The Hub provides lots of fresh produce, some protein and we are able to give it out instead of the same generic tins week after week. This means we can offer a variety of fresh food as well as tinned food. Just this morning we received the end-of-day food from the Coop in Sutton. We were able to create 22 food parcels which we are delivering today. Being a member of the FareShare Food Hub saves us about £300 pound a month, which has enabled us to reimburse our amazing volunteers for their petrol money – this is invaluable at a time when the cost of fuel is rising”.

The Community Larder is seeing increasing cases of COVID at the moment, so their deliveries to people who are affected are growing. They hope to continue working with FareShare and the Coop, in order to maintain their support.
