Find Out MoreWhen Andrea retired, she wasn’t looking for anything extra to do, but after seeing a story on East Midlands Today about FareShare Midlands’ need for drivers, she picked up the phone and hasn’t looked back since.
“I enjoy driving and thought it was a good cause”
Driving change in more ways than one As a volunteer van driver, Andrea helps redistribute surplus food to communities across the Midlands. But her role comes with a twist – she often surprises people when she turns up behind the wheel!
“When I first delivered on my own, people assumed there would be a man with me, which I found quite amusing. One place even told me I reversed the van into their entrance a lot better than the man the week before – I was quite chuffed!”
Andrea loves the satisfaction of helping out, meeting new people, and getting out each week “Being a volunteer seems to bring out the best in everyone.”
Andrea also runs a community breakfast for her village each month, so the FareShare Midlands mission really hits home: “Food waste annoys me, and I don’t like the thought of anyone in our country going hungry.” And when asked if she would recommend it to others, Andrea said:
“Yes, there are lots of different roles that you can do and it all seems to be really well organised”
Like Andrea, you can challenge expectations, make new connections, and help fight hunger and food waste across the Midlands.
