Finding confidence and new skills through FareShare Midlands' I-CAN programme

When 65-year-old Howida first connected with FareShare Midlands, she was looking for a way to rebuild her confidence and take positive steps towards re-entering the workplace. Having spent years away from formal employment, she wanted to refresh her skills, develop new ones, and rediscover her sense of purpose.

Finding the Right Support

Howida first heard about FareShare Midlands’ SkillsShare programme through the Job Centre at Birmingham Central. The opportunity immediately appealed to her as it was a chance to learn, grow, and connect with others in a supportive environment.

However, returning to learning later in life wasn’t without its challenges. Health concerns sometimes affected her energy and motivation, and she felt uncertain about what she could achieve at her age. Her confidence had dipped over time, leaving her hesitant to step outside her comfort zone.

Despite these feelings, Howida was determined to make a change. With encouragement from the FareShare Midlands team, she joined the I-CAN programme - a tailored course designed to build practical abilities and improve personal wellbeing.

A Holistic Approach to Growth

Through I-CAN, Howida received personalised support that focused on her individual needs and goals. The programme combined sessions in numeracy and literacy with practical life skills workshops, covering topics such as financial wellbeing, the “5 Ways to Wellbeing” framework, and communication skills.

The blend of learning and self-development created a safe, uplifting environment where Howida could rediscover her strengths. Rather than focusing solely on academic skills, the sessions encouraged her to build confidence, resilience, and a sense of connection - key ingredients for moving forward at any stage of life.

Rebuilding Confidence and Looking Ahead

Over time, Howida noticed real progress. She gained new knowledge and practical skills that she could use every day, from managing finances to communicating effectively. Just as importantly, she began to believe in herself again.

Reflecting on her journey, Howida shared:

“Thank you to FareShare Midlands. I feel that my knowledge has increased and I am grateful for the support.”

Today, Howida feels more confident and empowered to take on new opportunities. She has expressed an interest in volunteering with Central Mosque, giving back to her community and continuing her journey of personal growth.

Creating Lasting Impact

Howida’s story is a powerful example of how FareShare Midlands’ employability programmes can make a difference at any stage of life. By combining practical learning with wellbeing support and confidence-building, the team helps people overcome barriers, rediscover their potential, and re-engage with their communities.

For Howida, this support has opened the door to a brighter, more connected future - one where learning, purpose, and confidence continue to grow.
