When EMA Training set out to expand its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, the team sought opportunities that would create a tangible impact in their local communities. In 2023, a former colleague introduced them to FareShare Midlands (FSM), sparking an enduring partnership driven by shared values and a commitment to social good.

A Shared Mission for Change

EMA Training, a leading provider of apprenticeship and training programmes, quickly recognised the alignment between their CSR strategy and FSM’s mission to tackle food waste and food insecurity. The EMA team showed enthusiasm from the start, after a FareShare representative attended a team meeting, “the scheme was spoken about so passionately several staff wanted to get involved straight away” said a representative from EMA Training.

Sharing values of Respect and Collaboration, the partnership between EMA Training and FareShare Midlands has a positive impact for both organisations: “We believe in treating everyone with dignity, regardless of their background or circumstances which we think aligns perfectly with the way FareShare Midlands approaches its work. Respect for individuals, their voices and their needs is fundamental in creating an inclusive and supportive community.”

Overcoming Challenges to Make a Difference

Like many businesses, EMA Training faced logistical challenges in allowing employees to volunteer during work hours. However, recognising the importance of this initiative, the company’s Managing Director committed to creating dedicated volunteering opportunities each quarter. This decision ensured that staff members could contribute without the barrier of work commitments.

A Rewarding Experience for All

Volunteering at FSM has been an eye-opening and fulfilling experience for EMA Training employees. The hands-on nature of the work has deepened their understanding of food waste and food insecurity while fostering stronger connections among colleagues.

“We have been given the opportunity to work alongside colleagues we may normally not have the opportunity to work with, but through volunteering we have realised we have shared values. For me personally, it has also deepened my understanding and empathy of those in need and motivated me to do all I can to support where possible” shared one EMA team member, Rebecca. “The thing that stood out for me most was the passion from all staff and volunteers to ensure as little waste as possible, and the sheer amount of food that would have gone to waste if it wasn’t for organisations like FSM.”

Beyond the direct impact on the community, EMA Training has also gained internal benefits from the partnership. Colleagues who typically wouldn’t work together have found common ground through volunteering, strengthening team cohesion and morale.

Inspiring Others to Get Involved

EMA Training wholeheartedly recommends corporate volunteering at FSM. The organisation’s Managing Director was so inspired by her own experience that she encouraged all employees to participate.

“The team found the organisation of the service very effective. It’s a very safe and enjoyable place to volunteer and I felt looked after and respected by the other volunteers and staff.”

Looking to the Future

As EMA Training continues to grow its CSR initiatives, its partnership with FareShare Midlands remains a key pillar of its commitment to social responsibility. Through ongoing volunteering and advocacy, the team hopes to inspire other businesses to join the fight against food waste and hunger.

By working together, EMA Training and FareShare Midlands are not only redistributing surplus food but also building stronger, more connected communities one volunteering day at a time.
