FareShare Midlands has opened the first food redistribution hub in Lincolnshire, which will see more surplus food from retailers, manufacturers and suppliers being delivered to charities and community groups across the county.
Working together with neighbouring FareShare, FareShare Hull and Humber, and partners Lincolnshire Coop, Lincolnshire Community Foundation and Lincolnshire Food Partnerhip, the pilot project will initially reach groups such as school holiday clubs, community larders and community centres in Lincoln, East Lindsey and North East Lincolnshire. The hub will take in unsold food such as fruit and veg, bread and baked goods from Lincolnshire Coop stores each day, as well as other surplus from retailers and suppliers within the county.
Already signed up to the scheme is Gousto, a major food supplier with two sites in Spalding, who will divert their surplus food to FareShare for people in need.
The hub be run by a mix of FareShare staff and volunteers. More volunteers are needed to help with tasks including driving the collection and delivery vehicles and helping to sort and pack the food in the warehouse. To find out more about volunteering call Jess on 07512 570560.
Any groups in the pilot areas interested in accessing surplus food should get in touch, as well as food businesses who have surplus that they would like to donate, enquiries@faresharemidlands.org.uk
With thanks to our funders Lincolnshire Community Foundation and Lincolnshire Coop, Allen Signs for supporting the signage and Midlands Truck and Van and Freezerent for enabling the use of an electric van.
