In the UK today 4.3 million people, including 2.5 million children, are currently struggling to afford to eat. During the first week of October, FareShare Midlands set out to raise extra funds to help feed vulnerable people in the highest areas of deprivation across the Midlands.

An incredible effort from staff, volunteers, plus their families and friends resulted in 900 miles being racked up, raising over £3,600 which will allow us to send out over 12,000 extra meals!

The ‘Miles for Meals’ challenge was designed to enable anyone to get moving while raising vital funds for FareShare Midlands. Participants ran, walked, cycled and swam for an amazing 900 miles.

Team Birmingham were crowned Depot Winner with 212 miles and £949 raised! Pierce O’Connor, Food Supply Project Coordinator, cycled a huge 163 miles to win the Individual Effort award!

Other highlights included:
  • 30 people took on the ‘Miles for Meals’ challenge this year
  • Ruth Newbold, Regional Operations Manager, walked 40 miles and video-blogged every day
  • Camille McCawley and Anthony Holder, Community Development Managers, ran the London Marathon as part of their challenge
  • Yvonne Foody, Employability and Volunteer Manager, secured a £100 donation from one of our corporate sponsors

Simone Connolly, Director of FareShare Midlands, said
“I want to share a huge thank you and well done to those who took part. The amount raised at this challenging time certainly exceeded our expectations. We are amazed at the dedication, hard work and slog of our food heroes. We are so grateful to all of our participants and their families and friends, who offered so much support and sponsorship”.
