This Easter break, we are working to support children and families who are facing food poverty across the Midlands region. Our concerns around the rise of food poverty due to the pandemic are by no means easing, even as the UK plans to return to ‘normality’. Parents and carers who were once stable, have suffered job losses adding to the already-vulnerable community of families, individuals and children who are living in food insecurity on a daily basis. The End Child Poverty Initiative 2019, state that 63,653 children are facing food poverty across Derbyshire alone and a further 73,893 children in Leicestershire.
Through our strong partnerships and via our network of Community Food Members, we will provide over 70 tonnes of food across the two areas this Easter period. This is equivalent to 178,570 meals, reaching children and families who would otherwise face difficulty in accessing enough or any food at all. Our members are made up of; schools, youth centres, food banks and community interest projects, faith groups, hostels and shelters. These groups provide crucial and invaluable support to individuals and families living in poverty across the Midlands.
We will be working with Rural Action Derbyshire to supply nearly 30 tonnes of quality surplus food to our groups, this is equivalent to 71,428 meals reaching as many children across the area as possible.
In Leicester, our support reaches some of the cities highest areas of deprivation including, New Parks, Woodgate and Eyres Monsell. During the Easter period, we will supply up to 45 tonnes of food across the city, which is equivalent to 107,142 meals worth of surplus food that would have otherwise gone to waste.
One of the groups who have already begun receiving their Easter food support from our South Wigston depot says, "By working in conjunction with Fareshare Midlands, we will be providing holiday hunger bags. This will ensure that food poverty is reduced within the local area, and local families will be provided with the support that they need. A large proportion of our local children are entitled to Free school meals (FSM), therefore with the support of our dedicated volunteers we will be providing 600 food parcels to families over the two week period. The type of food supplied to our groups is a large mixture. FareShare food is surplus food rescued from the food industry. Often our groups are happily surprised at the products they receive, especially new members. From avocados, to bagels and lovely stock from Waitrose. Thanks to our incredible partnership, we take pride in our ability to provide our members and their beneficiaries with quality surplus food, which not only meets a basic need, but also provides happiness and excitement for those who are struggling.
