Since the beginning of our pilot project in Lincolnshire, we have had the continued support from Jake, Jamie and Emily; volunteers from Friendz & Co.

Our 6 month pilot project began in July earlier this year, with a goal to utilise surplus, end-of-day produce from Lincolnshire Co-op stores and other suppliers, to support community organisations across the county. Every week the three friends sort through the surplus food together at our depot at Vulcan Park, learning important warehousing and food safety skills, to ensure quality food is ready to be delivered to our Community Food Members across the county.

Founded in 2017, Friendz & Co was established to support young adults with learning disabilities in gaining vital work experience, skills and employment. When they’re not helping out at FareShare Midlands, Jake, Jamie and Emily are busy running the cafe at their local football ground in Bottesford, as well as working on their new Friendz Farm, looking after animals and growing fresh fruit and vegetables. To find out more about the work they do check out their website.

Despite the three being new to the warehousing world, they have quickly learnt how to use warehousing equipment such as pump trucks, and the importance of keeping the depot tidy and organised throughout the day. Warehouse Supervisor, Ian, says “I can’t speak highly enough of Emily, Jake and Jamie. They arrive at work ready for the day ahead and are conscientious in whatever they are asked to do. In addition to this, they bring a great attitude and good humour to the workplace, it is a pleasure to have them all here and I hope that it continues”.

Now in month 4 of the project, volunteers such as Jake, Jamie and Emily have been vital to keeping our warehouse operating and reaching the communities we support. If you would like to find out more about volunteering with us and joining our FareShare Family, please get in touch through our website.
