To further maximize the social and economic value of surplus food, we are now moving into meal production by leasing the commercial kitchen at Loxley House in partnership with Eat Culture, Nottingham Catering at Nottingham City Council. Together, we aim to support vulnerable members of the community and help to improve food security across Nottingham and the Midlands. The project is being funded by the retailer Sainsbury’s, in a demonstration of their true commitment to making healthy and sustainable diets accessible for everyone and their ‘Helping Everyone Eat Better’ mission.
FareShare Midlands will use the catering kitchen facilities to turn good surplus food into delicious meals and meal components, enabling us to grow and diversify the range and usage of the surplus food we receive. The local community organisations and charities – our Community Food Members – will be able to offer these meals to their beneficiaries. Perhaps they will be used as part of their regular food parcel, foodbank, community café services or HAF programme – or maybe we will see new social eating activities launched, to help people fight the isolation and loneliness that grew during COVID19. We are hoping that ultimately these meals will lead to improvements in community health, wellbeing and social cohesion.
Venturing into meal preparation also means that FareShare Midlands can make use of more local, high-value and/or ‘hard-to-place’ surplus foods, and the additional meals created offer greater flexibility in terms of shelf life and usability. Cooked meals and components can be frozen and stored for later use and/or redistribution. All of the above activities mean that we will continue to reduce the impact of food waste on the environment and carbon emissions, supporting Nottingham City Council’s 2028 carbon neutrality strategy.
