Keep kids busy during the school holidays by getting them into the kitchen!

We all know that keeping kids entertained isn’t the easiest task at the best of times, let alone over the school holidays, so let us help you to keep them busy.

Below are some recipes that you can get your kids involved with. Not only will this keep them entertained, but it will help build their confidence and develop their skills. The benefits of cooking with kids do not stop there. Cooking helps to encourage creativity, improves communication and increases their awareness of food.

The recipes below are also great at using up leftovers from the fridge and cupboards!

The Best Banana Oat Bars

  • Peel 3 ripe bananas and mash with a fork.
  • Add in 200g (approximately 2 cups) of oats, 1 tablespoon of water and mix together.
  • Here, you can get creative! Add raisins, nuts, chocolate chips or cinnamon.
  • Add the mix to a lightly greased/lined baking tin and press down firmly with the back of a fork to make it compact.
  • Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes at 200 degrees.
  • Slice into bars once cool.

Perfect Pasta Salad

  • Cook whatever pasta shapes you have by adding to a pan of boiling water and cooking for 10-12 minutes. Once the pasta is soft, drain and set aside in a bowl to cool.
  • Cut up any vegetables that you have to hand, such as tomato, cucumber, onion and lettuce.
  • Make a simple salad dressing using oil, vinegar/lemon juice and seasoning.
  • Add the vegetables and salad dressing to a bowl of cooked pasta and mix in.

Terrific Tortilla Pizzas

  • Spread pizza sauce (tomato sauce or puree) on a tortilla.
  • Add any toppings you fancy, such as peppers, sweetcorn, spinach, onion, chicken or ham. Sprinkle on grated cheese.
  • Bake in the oven for 10 minutes at 200 degrees.
  • For some extra fun, challenge the kids to make a face out of the pizza toppings!
