The Coronation Food Project is a new initiative to redistribute more surplus food and use it for social and environmental good across all 4 nations of the UK. The project aims to create a fairer and more sustainable future by:
 

The initiative was launched by His Majesty King Charles III to mark his 75th birthday. It is being led by Baroness Louise Casey and Dame Martina Milburn, and co-ordinated by the King Charles III Charitable Fund. The project will support leading food redistribution charities, including FareShare, which has a UK-wide network of 18 partners including FareShare Midlands. 

 

One of the key aims is to significantly enhance the food sector’s logistics capacity. A network of major distribution centres- known as Coronation Food Hubs - will be created, with initial hubs being planned for Glasgow, Liverpool, Northern Ireland and London. These hubs, along with expanded warehouses, fridges, freezers, vans and drivers, will fast-track the transit of food throughout the county.

 

Furthermore, senior leaders from the UK food industry have come together in a historic pledge in support of the Coronation Food Project. It encourages major supermarkets and food manufacturers to join FareShare's innovative Alliance Manufacturing programme to redistribute even more surplus food to charities nationwide.

 

 

By signing up to the Alliance Manufacturing programme, major retailers, manufacturers and organisations from all areas of the supply chain are joining forces to contribute their surplus, donated or under-utilised resources. These resources include food, packaging, labour hours and factory/distribution capacity, and will be utilised to produce even more nutritious food to help the increasing numbers of people in food poverty.

 

As a result, FareShare Midlands - as part of the FareShare network – is already seeing a fresh supply of essential food products which we are distributing to our 500 charity members. This will support the 67,000 people who benefit from their services every week – often families on low income, the elderly, and people suffering with addiction or homelessness. The first phase of the Alliance Manufacturing programme will see 1 million meals donated to the FareShare network from M&S and 2 Sisters Food Group before Christmas.

 

The list of partners already signed up to the Pledge includes Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, M&S, Asda, Aldi, Morrisons, 2 Sisters, Bakkavor, Cranswick, Nestle, Greencore, Samworth Brothers, ABF, Princes, Greenyard, Warburtons, IGD and Lidl.
